President Cyril Ramaphosa last week signed off the new Expropriation Act into law. Expropriation without compensation has been debated since 1994 but has been pushed more fervently following the ANC’s 2017 conference.

SA’s National Assembly passed the Expropriation Bill in March last year, a few months before the elections. There has been opposition to the bill from various quarters, including opposition parties and business organisations, but Ramaphosa signing it into law has peeved the main opposition, the DA, which is a key partner in the new government of national unity (GNU).
