Kganyago named Stellenbosch University Chancellor
South African central bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago was elected chancellor of Stellenbosch University, succeeding retired Judge Edwin Cameron as the ceremonial head of an institution that was once a bastion for the country’s White Afrikaner establishment during apartheid rule.
The university’s electoral college met on Friday morning to consider Kganyago’s appointment. The central bank chief was the only candidate under consideration to replace Cameron, whose term ended in December.
Kganyago was “unanimously elected” chancellor, the university, situated about 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Cape Town, said in a statement.

As chancellor, “I am looking forward to inspiring the next generation to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of our country and continent,” Kganyago said in the statement.
Kganyago, who holds a masters degree in economics from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, has served as governor of the central bank since November 2014. He was previously director-general of the National Treasury, where he worked for 15 years.
