Twytch is the first e-hailing platform in Africa to incorporate blockchain-backed identity verification, which aims to ensure user safety and security. The company has partnered with Secure Citizen to implement Verifiable Credential (VC) technology, which provides tamper-proof, digital identity verification.

“Through the power of blockchain technology and verifiable credentials, we are not just enhancing safety and security; we are redefining what trust means in the e-hailing service industry. Every ride is a safe space, every interaction is verified, and every user is protected,” said Denvin Naidoo, safety and security lead for Twytch Africa.

According to the company, the platform addresses long-standing concerns in South Africa’s e-hailing sector, including safety, identity fraud and crimes involving unverified users.

Martin Grunewald, chief executive of global growth at Secure Citizen, noted: “Twytch is setting a new benchmark in Africa with our industry-first advanced digital identity verification technology. This offering raises the bar for safety and security in ride-sharing, creating a more trusted experience for everyone involved.”

Empowering drivers with benefits

In a unique partnership with Momentum Group, Twytch is providing drivers with access to subsidised medical insurance, funeral policies, and other essential benefits. Drivers will also gain access to financial services, including vehicle insurance, retirement benefits, and financial wellness programmes.

Unlike traditional commission-based earnings, Twytch will offer drivers fixed-rate payments, meal allowances, annual bonuses, and subsidised operational costs, marking another industry first, the company noted.

Passenger benefits

For passengers, Twytch offers surge-free pricing, to ensure transparent and fair fares. The platform operates as a fully cashless system, accepting payments only through cards or the in-app wallet.

Future plans

Twytch plans to launch city-by-city starting in February, beginning with Johannesburg, followed by Durban, Cape Town, and Pretoria. Its long-term strategy includes nationwide and continental expansion. Driver recruitment is already underway, with plans to onboard 12 500 drivers.
